Hardwood Care & Maintenance
for Florida Homeowners
We all know that it can rain at a moment’s notice in Florida, and moisture is extremely problematic for authentic hardwood. Keep mats by all entrances for scraping footwear and use racks by doors for footwear removal during rainy or moist weather. Add area rugs with the appropriate backing for hardwood floors to add an extra layer of protection. The goal is to minimize the amount of dirt, debris, mud, moisture, and pet dander that reaches the hardwood floors in your home.
Removing Dirt & Debris from Hardwood
The number one key to keeping your hardwood floors pristine is removing dirt and debris effectively to prevent abrasion and scratches to the wood surface. To achieve this goal, sweep with a gentle bristle broom or dust-mop as frequently as possible.
Life With Pets on Hardwood
Keep your pet’s nails trimmed to prevent scratches to your floors. Brushing pets regularly will also reduce the amount of hair and dander on the wood surface. Make sure that your pets are house-trained before allowing them to spend time indoors. Place mats under pet food and water bowls to add extra protection from moisture.
Treating Spills & Stains on Hardwood
It’s very important to treat spills as soon as they occur to prevent moisture damage to naturally porous hardwood planks:
- Gently lift any solid material with a spoon and paper towels.
- Wipe up the spill with a dry, clean cloth, starting from the perimeter of the spill and working towards the center. Repeat this step with a new dry, clean cloth until the spill is removed.
- Use a gentle hardwood-specific cleaner to spot treat as needed and use paper towels to ensure a dry surface afterward.
- Consult your hardwood warranty before wet-mopping your floors.
- If mopping, use as little water as needed and dry the surface after.
